The Shoe Books

Have you ever seen "You've Got Mail"? In the movie Meg Ryan's character, Kathleen Kelly, talks about the "Shoe Books." They are children's books written by Noel Streatfeild. I started with Ballet Shoes because that is the book that Meg Ryan's character says to read first, of course. ;-) This book is about three orphaned girls, who become adopted sisters. While waiting for their guardian to return from a trip, their nanny enrolls the girls in a ballet school to earn some money to pay for their livelihood. It is truly a delightful book, and so far it is my favorite...just like Kathleen Kelly said it would be. ;-) I believe a movie has been made of this book, but I have yet to watch it...I'll put it on my list of things to do. ;-) Next, I read Dancing Shoes. This book was also delightful. Currently, I am reading Theater Shoes. In this book, three siblings--Sorrel, Mark, and Holly--must go live with their grandmother (their mother's mother) they have never met. Since their grandmother is an actress and everyone in their mother's family has been in this business, Grandmother insists that the children be schooled in the arts. Because their grandmother has been out of work for quite a while, there is a shortage of bees and honey (money) in the house. I love this book because it connects with Ballet Shoes. To pay for the theater school, the children receive scholarships from Pauline, Petrova, and Posy...the now-adult sisters from the book, Ballet Shoes. So far I am enjoying this book. Reading children's books is a hobby I absolutely love! It is my goal to read all of the "Shoe Books". I don't even know how many there are, or if they are all still in print. These are the books I have seen: Ballet Shoes, Dancing Shoes, Theater Shoes, Skating Shoes, Tennis Shoes, and Party Shoes. If you get a chance to read any of these books, do it! These books, in my opinion, are classics.
